Eagles announce spring signings
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team announced its spring signings. Joining Head Coach Sue Kunkle's Screaming Eagles is junior infielder Laura Bohannon (Addison, Illinois), sophomore catcher/utility player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois), and freshman first baseman Brittany DeWeese (Evansville, Indiana).
Bohannon transfers from the College of DuPage (Glen Ellyn, Illinois) where she was a member of two NJCAA III Tournament teams. She helped lead the Chaparrals to an overall record of 61-32 by hitting a combined .380 with 32 RBIs in her two seasons at DuPage.
As a sophomore, Bohannon hit .417 with 21 RBIs and 17 stolen bases to help DuPage to a 31-15 mark and a sixth-place finish at the NJCAA III National Championship Tournament. She hit .343 with 11 RBIs and 10 stolen bases as a freshman to help the Chaparrals to a 30-17 record and a fifth-place finish at NJCAA III Tournament.
Bohannon graduated from Addison Trail High School (Addison, Illinois) where she earned six varsity letters in softball and basketball.
"Laura brings more depth to our infield and will work some in the outfield," Kunkle said. "She is quick and very aggressive on the bases and is a disciplined hitter with slapping and power potential."
"We are looking to be a quicker team in 2008 and Laura's speed enables us to be more threatening in our offensive game," Kunkle concluded.
Loete transfers from Bradley University (Peoria, Illinois) where she played in 23 games as a freshman in 2007. During her freshman year, Loete hit .217 with three home runs and eight RBIs to help Bradley to a 26-23 record.
A four-time first-team All-Conference selection at Pekin High School (Pekin, Illinois), Loete earned second-team All-Area honors as a senior after recording a whopping .515 batting average. She was PHS's Offensive MVP each of her last two seasons and was the Illinois State hitting derby finalist as well as a sectional champion as a junior.
"Sara is going to help us in a lot of different areas," Kunkle said. "She provides depth behind the plate and at first base, and provides us with more power in our line-up. Sara has already gained collegiate experience behind the plate and as a designated player, which enables her to step into whatever role she is given."
DeWeese will make her collegiate debut in a USI uniform after graduating from Memorial High School (Evansville) where she was a first-team All-State performer as a senior. During her senior year, DeWeese hit .421 with five doubles, two triples, 23 RBIs, and a city-high seven home runs. She finished her career at MHS with 15 career home runs and was MHS's team-leader in RBIs as a sophomore, junior, and senior.
A three-time first-team All-District, All-City, and All-Metro performer, DeWeese tied an Indiana state record by belting three consecutive home runs in a single game as a junior in 2006.
"Brittany comes to USI as one of the most talented players out of this area," Kunkle said. "She will be used at first base and will be a definite contender for the middle of our offensive line up. Brittany has great power at the plate and we are excited to see her mature into an outstanding college player."
Bohannon, DeWeese, and Loete join freshman utility player Dani Monks (Evansville, Indiana) and freshman infielder Dani Finkelstein (Windsor, Colorado), who signed national letters of intent during the early signing period last fall.
