Eagles top #20 Wayne State, fall to #11 Emporia State

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Cougar Classic Saturday. The Screaming Eagles defeated No. 20 Wayne State University, 11-7, before falling to #11 Emporia State University, 3-2.
USI (4-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the victory over regional foe Wayne State, than used a six-run third inning followed by a three-run fourth inning to build a 10-0 advantage. The Eagles added another run in the fifth inning before the Warriors put up their first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior pitcher Stephanie Schneider
(Birdseye, Indiana) picked up her second win of the season with the complete-game decision.
The Eagles battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the loss to Emporia State. USI used a solo home run from freshman first baseman Brittany DeWeese
(Evansville, Indiana) in the top of the fourth inning to pull the Eagles to with in a run. Junior shortstop Allyn McKinley
(Sullivan, Indiana), who was 3-for-4 from the plate in the loss, tied the game in the fifth inning with a run-scoring single.
Emporia State (5-7), however, got a two-out, walk-off single from senior shortstop April Huddleston in the bottom of the seventh inning to thwart the Eagles' comeback bid.
Senior pitcher Amy Harrison
(Graceville, Florida) gave up two runs in the first inning and the final run in the seventh inning as she was charged with the loss. Harrison (2-4) scattered nine hits throughout six-and-two-thirds innings of work while recording six strikeouts.
The Eagles play Washburn University Sunday at 12:30 p.m. before partaking in tournament play at either 2:15 p.m. or 4 p.m.
