Eagles lose pair of one-run games
Washburn (5-11): 1, Southern Indiana (4-8): 0
#11 Emporia State (6-8): 6, Southern Indiana: 5
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team lost a pair of one-run games Sunday at the Cougar Classic. The Screaming Eagles fell to Washburn University, 1-0, before falling to No. 11 Emporia State University, 6-5, later in the day.
Washburn (5-11) took advantage of a two-out error to plate the game's only run in the bottom of the third inning. Kelly Swygert held the Screaming Eagles' potent offense to just two hits to pick up the complete-game shutout.
Junior hurler Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) was charged with the loss despite giving up just one unearned run off five hits in six innings of work. Schneider (2-2) struck out eight batters while allowing just two walks.
Against Emporia State (6-8), the Eagles rallied from a one-run deficit by plating a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Hornets, however, tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth and scored four times in the next inning to take a 6-2 advantage into the final two innings.
The Eagles (4-8) rallied with three runs in the sixth and had the tying run on base in the seventh. USI, however, could not push their sixth run across the plate as it suffered its third straight one-run loss and second in as many days to Emporia State.
