Eagles wrap up Rebel Spring Games with split,
Slated to open GLVC play this weekend

Kristin Eickholt

KISSIMMEE, Fla.University of Southern Indiana senior third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) hit a two-run, ground-rule triple in the top of the fifth inning to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Shippensburg University and a split in their final day at the Division II Rebel Spring Games.

USI (11-11), which lost to Great Lakes Region foe Ferris State University, 4-1, earlier in the day, finished its 10-game Florida swing with a 7-3 record and pulled to the .500 mark after starting the year with a 4-8 record.

Amy Harrison

Senior hurler Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) pitched a gem against Shippensburg (8-10), allowing just one run off four hits. Harrison (5-7) struck out seven batters to pick up the complete-game victory and her second straight win.

Earlier in the day, junior pitcher Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) saw control issues get her into trouble in the top of the first inning against Ferris State (5-6). The Bulldogs took advantage three walks and a hit batter to plate three runs in the opening frame.

Schneider (4-3), who gave up just four hits, was charged with the loss after giving up four runs and five walks in seven innings of work.

Offensively, the Eagles struggled to get anything going as they were held to just four hits as well. Freshman second baseman Dani Finkelstein (Windsor, Colorado) drove in USI's only run with a single in the sixth inning.

USI, which left 11 runners on base, had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning before a fielder's choice ground out ended the contest.

The Eagles are scheduled to open GLVC play Saturday when they travel to Indianapolis to take on the University of Indianapolis in an 11 a.m. doubleheader. USI's GLVC doubleheader Sunday at Saint Joseph's College is likely to be either moved to a different site due to field conditions or postponed to a later date.
