Eagles start eight-game homestand Wednesday
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team starts an eight-game homestand Wednesday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Rockhurst University in a GLVC doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.
USI's doubleheader with Rockhurst was originally scheduled for March 21, but poor field conditions forced the two teams to reschedule to Wednesday.
The Screaming Eagles (18-14, 5-3 GLVC) are tied for fourth in the GLVC standings after winning eight of their last 12 games. USI is coming off a week in which it went 6-2, including 4-2 in the GLVC.
Senior leftfielder Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) has been red-hot, having hit safely in 11 straight games. Wood is hitting a blistering .595 during her hitting streak that has seen her raise her batting average nearly 150 points.
For the season, sophomore designated player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) leads the Eagles with a .412 batting average, seven doubles, seven home runs, and 35 RBIs. Loete, who is second in the GLVC in RBIs and fourth in home runs, needs just 15 RBIs to tie the single-season school record of 50, set by Pat Snell in 1978.
Rockhurst (17-8, 4-2 GLVC), which is third in the GLVC standings, is having an outstanding year after finishing last in the GLVC standings each of the last two seasons. The Hawks sport the league's top pitching staff with a team ERA of 1.25.
USI also hosts Bellarmine University Saturday and Northern Kentucky University Sunday before finishing its eight-game homestand with Hillsdale College April 9. Saturday and Sunday's GLVC doubleheaders are slated for noon starts, while the regional doubleheader with Hillsdale is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
Bellarmine (9-23, 2-6 GLVC), which hosts Spalding University today and Butler University Wednesday, has lost three of its last four contests after splitting a doubleheader with the University of Missouri-St. Louis this past Sunday.
Northern Kentucky (9-15, 3-5 GLVC), which visits Ashland University Wednesday and Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday, was 4-2 last weekend, including a GLVC sweep of Missouri-St. Louis.
