Senior leftfielder Kathy Wood
(Lynnville, Indiana) hit a two-out, walk-off single to extend her hitting streak to 13 games and give the University of Southern Indiana softball team a 3-2 game-two victory over Rockhurst University Wednesday at UE's Cooper Stadium. USI also won the first game, 7-3, marking the Screaming Eagles' fourth doubleheader-sweep in the last 10 days.
After getting an RBI-single from junior shortstop Allyn McKinley
(Sullivan, Indiana) in the bottom of the second inning and a solo home run from sophomore designated player Sara Loete
(Pekin, Illinois) in the fourth frame, the Eagles looked to be in cruise control heading into the fifth inning of game two.
Rockhurst (17-10, 4-4 GLVC), however, got a two-run home run off the bat of senior first baseman Erica Stone in the fifth inning to tie the contest at 2-2.
Senior hurler Stephanie Schneider
(Birdseye, Indiana), who looked sharp inside the pitching circle, held the Hawks in check the rest of the way, setting the stage for USI's game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Wood, who was nearly unstoppable in game one, struggled at the plate in game two and it looked as if her hitting streak might end at 12. However, with runners and second and third, Wood stroked a 3-1 pitch to deep right-centerfield, easily pushing across the game-winning run from third base.
In the first game, Wood went 3-for-3 with a pair of singles, a triple, an RBI, and three runs scored. She helped set the tone for an Eagle offense that produced 10 hits and a pair of extra-base hits.
USI (20-14, 7-3 GLVC), which moved into third place in the GLVC standings with the wins, got on the board in the first inning when Loete singled in Wood. Loete, who raised her RBI count to 39 with a combined four run-scoring hits in the twin bill, hit a two-run single in the third inning to put the Eagles up 3-0.
Rockhurst cut into the Eagles lead in the fifth inning when Stone hit her first two-run homer of the day. USI, however, answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the strength of a run-scoring walk by McKinley and an RBI-single by sophomore catcher Tara McConnell
Wood hit a one-out, RBI-triple in the sixth inning to put the Eagles up 6-2. She scored one batter later when senior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt
(Van Wert, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly to left-centerfield.
