EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team settled for a doubleheader split with Bellarmine University Saturday afternoon at UE's Cooper Stadium. The Screaming Eagles won the first game, 4-0, but lost the nightcap, 5-2.
Junior rightfielder Lacey Ligmanwoski (Homer Glen, Illinois) and senior leftfielder Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) recorded back-to-back hits to start the first inning of game one for the Eagles, who jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first frame.
After a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt
(Van Wert, Ohio) put the speedy duo in scoring position, sophomore designated player Sara Loete
(Pekin, Illinois) flew out to right field to push home Ligmanwoski from third base.
The Eagles (21-15, 8-4 GLVC) tacked on three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Loete added to her GLVC-leading RBI tally with an RBI single, while junior shortstop Allyn McKinley
(Sullivan, Indiana) recorded an RBI-single to cap off the Eagles' scoring.
Junior hurler Stephanie Schneider
(Birdseye, Indiana) was stout for the Eagles as she recorded her first complete-game shutout of the season. Schneider (6-3) spread seven hits throughout seven innings while striking out two batters to earn the win.
In game two, Bellarmine (12-26, 3-7 GLVC) got off to a fast start, recording two runs in the first inning and another two in the second inning to claim a 4-1 lead.
USI hitters struggled in the second game as they were held to just three hits and two runs. Loete recorded the Eagles' lone RBI of the nightcap with a run-scoring single in the first inning.
Wood also saw her season-best 14-game hitting streak come to an end as she went 0-for-1 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt in three trips to the plate.
Sophomore pitcher Kambria Current
(Indianapolis, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, off four hits in one-and-a-third innings of work.
USI returns to action Sunday when it hosts Northern Kentucky University in a noon GLVC doubleheader at Cooper Stadium. Head Coach Sue Kunkle
is just one win away from tying former USI Head Coach Beth Watson for first-place on USI's all-time wins list (206).
Sophomore designated player Sara Loete
(Pekin, Illinois) leads the GLVC with 42 RBIs on the season, just eight short of USI's single-season school record, which was set by Pat Snell in 1978…senior leftfielder Kathy Wood
hit .609 during her 14-game hitting streak. With her triple in game one, Wood is five triples shy of the single-season school-record of 11, set by Amber Huse in 1995.
