Sara Loete

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Sophomore designated player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) tied USI's single-season record for RBIs Tuesday night as the University of Southern Indiana softball team swept a Great Lakes Region doubleheader from Oakland City University at the USI Softball Field.

The Screaming Eagles (28-18) defeated the Mighty Oaks 8-0 in five innings in game one, before taking the nightcap, 5-2.

After a lead-off single and a pair of walks loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning of game one, Loete stepped up to the plate with the opportunity to at least tie Pat Snell's 30-year old record. Loete did not disappoint as she ripped a double down the leftfield line to plate a pair of runs and record her GLVC-best 49th and 50th RBIs of the year.

Freshman first baseman Brittany DeWeese (Evansville, Indiana) followed with an RBI-single as the Eagles tacked on two more runs to take a 4-0 lead.

Niki Stewart

After the two teams played to a scoreless stalemate throughout the next three innings, the Eagles exploded for four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest via the eight-run rule. Junior shortstop Allyn McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) and freshman catcher Dani Monks (Evansville, Indiana) each had RBI hits, while senior second baseman Niki Stewart (Evansville, Indiana) ended the contest with a two-run, walk-off double.

Senior pitcher Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) picked up the win after allowing just three hits. Harrison (13-10) struck out a pair of batters while issuing two walks to record her team-high third shutout of the season.

DeWeese got the Eagles started in game two as she had an RBI-single in the bottom of the first to put USI up 1-0.

Lindsay Raikes

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the second inning when sophomore outfielder Lindsay Raikes (Speedway, Indiana) hit a two-run double to the centerfield fence.

Heather Swarts

After spotting Oakland City (9-17) a run in the third inning, the Eagles answered with back-to-back, two-out doubles by Monks and freshman outfielder Heather Swarts (Gas City, Indiana), the latter of which put the Eagles up 4-1.

Senior third baseman Kristin Eickholt's (Van Wert, Ohio) sacrifice fly in the fourth inning ended the scoring for the Eagles, who had a combined 13 runs and 20 hits on the day.

Junior hurler Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) got the win for the Eagles after giving up two runs off seven hits in seven innings of work. Schneider (9-4) issued four walks, but struck out a season-high tying eight batters.

USI returns to GLVC action this Saturday when the Eagles host Missouri University of Science and Technology at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles also host the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday. Both doubleheaders begin at noon.

Notes: Freshman catcher Dani Monks went a combined 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored in the two contests…sophomore outfielder Lindsay Raikes was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the second game, while freshman outfielder Heather Swarts went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in her second start of the season.
