EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team dropped a pair of home games Sunday to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 7-0 and 3-0, at the USI Softball Field.
USI (28-20, 11-9 GLVC) struggled to get anything going offensively as the Screaming Eagles were shutout for the third and fourth times in the last six games.
Defensively, errors and some timely hits by Missouri-St. Louis (20-20, 11-9 GLVC) led to USI's downfall on Sunday.
The Tritons took advantage of a pair of errors and a walk in game one to plate five runs in the top of the second. Missouri-St. Louis got a two-out, three-run double from first baseman Carly Maddock to cap off the Tritons' scoring in the second frame.
Senior pitcher Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs, two earned, off seven hits in seven innings of work. Harrison (13-11) struck out five batters, but four walks also hurt the right-hander.
In game two, the two teams found themselves in a pitcher's duel with neither team getting an edge until the top of the seventh inning.
Missouri-St. Louis took advantage of a lead-off error with three-straight two-out hits to plate three runs.
Junior hurler Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) was charged with the loss. Schneider (9-5) gave up three unearned runs off seven hits in seven innings of action.
USI returns to action Monday when it hosts Missouri University of Science and Technology in a GLVC doubleheader that was originally scheduled to be played yesterday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the USI Softball Field.
