Eagles add utility player to 2009 mix
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team announced that freshman catcher/utility player Alexandra Dunfee (Mishawaka, Indiana) has signed a national letter of intent to play for Head Coach Sue Kunkle's Screaming Eagles in 2009.
Dunfee graduated from Penn High School (Mishawaka, Indiana) where she played for former USI standouts Brooke Biggs and Missy Grover.
A two-time All-State and three-time All-Northern Indiana Conference honoree behind the plate, Dunfee was an Indiana All-Star this past season and is the Sportsfest catcher for the Metro All-Star team. She led PHS with 34 RBIs in just 30 games this past season while helping her squad to its third conference and sectional championship in the last four years.
In 2004, Dunfee was a member of the East Side Little League squad that took home the Junior League World Series title. She also helped her Little League team to the finals in the 2002 Little League World Series.
Most recently, Dunfee has competed for the Michiana Cruisers 18U Gold team as well as the Michiana Mystique 18U Gold squad, where she was a two-time All-Star catcher.
"Alex comes to USI with talent and the experience of being a part of winning tradition," Kunkle said. "She is very athletic and versatile, which will allow us to work her at different positions. Alex has been very successful at the plate and brings a lot of depth to our offensive line up."
In addition to Dunfee, USI's list of newcomers for the 2009 campaign include sophomore pitcher Dawn McClellan (Valparaiso, Indiana), sophomore pitcher/infielder Amanda Brendel (Salem, Illinois), sophomore third baseman/outfielder Amanda Pravdica (Newburgh, Indiana), freshman pitcher/middle infielder Hadley Clark (Owensboro, Kentucky), and freshman utility player Lauren Smith (New Palestine, Indiana).
