USI softball picked to finish third in GLVC
The University of Southern Indiana softball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason coaches’ poll. The Screaming Eagles received 65 points in the poll.
USI finished the 2001 season with a 36-17 overall record and finished third in the GLVC, posting a 16-6 record in league play. The Eagles finished fourth in the conference tournament and narrowly missed out on its third trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament, finishing fifth in the final Great Lakes Regional rankings.
Last season’s GLVC champion, Lewis University, received seven first place votes and was picked to finish first while Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was picked second in the poll with three first place votes. Both teams went to the NCAA II Tournament, with Lewis advancing to the championship game in Salem, Virginia.
Under the direction of new head coach Sue Kunkle, the Eagles will start the season Friday, February 22, when it travels to Kennesaw, Georgia to participate in the Kennesaw State University Tournament.
The Eagles will start their GLVC schedule Saturday, March 23, when Bellarmine University visits the USI Softball Field for a doubleheader.
