Eagles sending three to nationals

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's and women's track and field teams are sending three runners to the 2009 NCAA II Outdoor Championships, which are May 21-23 in San Angelo, Texas.
Junior All-American Mary Ballinger (Chesterton, Indiana) will represent the women's squad in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while sophomore David Goodman (Valparaiso, Indiana) and freshman Dustin Emerick (Elmwood, Illinois) will represent the men's squad in the steeplechase and 10,000 meters, respectively.

Ballinger, a five-time All-American, is making her second straight trip to the NCAA II Outdoor Championships after posting the nation's fastest time (10:26.73) at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, earlier this season. Ballinger, who is making her sixth trip to a national meet, finished 10th in the steeplechase at the NCAA II Outdoor Championships last year.
Both Emerick and Goodman are making their first appearances at the NCAA II Outdoor Championships and their second trip to a national meet after competing at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships last fall.

Emerick ranks eighth in the 10,000-meter field after setting a USI freshman record when he ran the event in 29 minutes, 57.41 seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays. Emerick was the GLVC Freshman of the Year in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.

Goodman is 11th in the men's steeplechase field after recording a time of nine minutes, 12.65 seconds at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays earlier this season. Like Emerick, Goodman was the GLVC Freshman of the Year in both indoor and outdoor track in 2008.
The prelims for the women's steeplechase are May 21 at 7:10 p.m., while the men's steeplechase prelims will follow at 7:40 p.m. The final of the men's 10,000 meters is slated for May 21 at 9:20 p.m., while the final in the women's steeplechase is May 23 at 5:10 p.m. The men's steeplechase final follows the women's at 5:25 p.m.
All-America honors are awarded to the top eight finishers in each event.
