ABCA names four Eagles All-Region
USI has three on the first team

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team had four players named to the Midwest All-Region teams by the American Baseball Coaches Association this week. Three of the four USI players were named to the first team.
Earning first-team honors in the outfield is senior Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana). He led the Eagles with a career-best season, posting career-highs in batting average (.383), runs scored (50), hits (85), doubles (25), home runs (8), and stolen bases (19).
The first-team All-GLVC and Daktronics All-Region player finished his career ranked third all-time in total bases (341); tied for fourth in home runs (20); tied for fifth in RBIs (141); and fifth in at-bats, hits, and doubles. Werry's career batting average of .317 is tied for 37th all-time at USI.
Recognized for their efforts on the mound were sophomore right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) and senior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana). The pair made a school-record 31 appearances each in 2009.
Leach set the USI single-season records for wins and winning percentage by going 11-0 in 2009. The first team All-GLVC pitcher, who won eight games out of the bullpen and three as a starter, also had a 2.87 ERA with 66 strike outs in 94 innings of work.
Larsen has re-asserted his dominance on the mound this season by tying for the NCAA Division II lead with 16 saves. The first team All-GLVC and Daktronics All-Region pitcher also posted a USI-best 2.48 ERA, while ranking third on the team with 62 strike outs in 58 innings of work.
The Eagles' closer finished his career ranked first at USI with 33 saves and fourth all-time with a 2.89 ERA.
In addition to the first-team honorees, USI senior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) was named second-team ABCA All-Region. Thieroff is third on the squad with a .320 batting and second on the squad with 47 RBIs. The first-team All-GLVC and second team Daktronics All-Region third baseman also was tied for second with eight home runs.
Thieroff finished his career at USI ranked third all-time in at-bats (711) and tied for fourth all-time with 11 triples. He also had a .284 career batting average.
