USI volleyball set for regional action
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will have its first chance to record regional victories as it competes in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover in Allendale, Michigan, this weekend. The Screaming Eagles will face Hillsdale College (8-2) and Ferris State University (7-1) on Friday and #25 Northwood University (9-1) on Saturday.
All three of USIís opponents this weekend were ranked in the top 10 of the Great Lakes Region preseason poll. USI was ranked sixth.
After posting a 7-2 record through their first two weekends of play, the Eagles have learned that they have more than just one offensive weapon in its arsenal. USI has had four different players record 10 or more kills in a match this season.
Leading the offensive charge this season is senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) and sophomore middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana). Wells has a team-high 3.66 kills per game while Gross is hitting a team-leading .369.
Both have helped the Eagles serving game tremendously. USI is averaging a blistering 3.52 service aces per game. Wells leads USI with 1.24 service aces per game while Gross is adding 0.79 service aces per game.
Junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) continues to provide good sets for USIís attack. She has tallied 10.9 assists per game and needs just 177 assists to reach 3,000 for her career.
Defensively, Wells leads the Eagles with 3.55 digs per game. She needs just two to reach 1,000 in her career. Senior outside hitter Kristi Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) follows with 2.78 digs per game.
The Eagles will open their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Friday, September 20, at the University of Indianapolis.
