USI volleyball sweeps through WVIAC/GLVC Crossover

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team went 3-0 this past weekend at the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles defeated the University of Charleston (3-0), West Virginia Wesleyan College (3-0), and Wheeling Jesuit University (3-0), as they raised their record to 14-6 on the season.
Senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 5.11 kills, 4.67 digs, 1.67 service aces, and a .427 attacking percentage on the weekend. Fellow classmate Kristi Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) followed Wells with 3.56 kills and 4.11 digs per game.
Junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) set USIís attack during its three matches. Boehmer averaged 13.00 assists per game and led the Eagles to a .322 attacking percentage on the weekend.
Kavanaugh, combined with Wells and sophomore middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana), led the Eagles in their victory over Charleston on Friday. The three combined for 37 of USIís 49 kills and 31 of USIís 51 digs as the Eagles won the match 30-13, 30-18, and 30-14. Kavanaugh had a match-high 13 kills while Wells came away with a match-high 14 digs.
Wells recorded 16 kills, a .600 attacking percentage, and seven service aces while Gross tallied 10 kills and hit .381 to lead USI past West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. USI hit .374 in the match and recorded 15 service aces as it topped WVWC 30-19, 30-14, and 30-20.
In USIís last match, against regionally ranked Wheeling Jesuit University on Saturday, the Eagles got offensive and defensive support from Wells and Kavanaugh. Wells finished with a match-high 18 kills and 20 digs while Kavanaugh tapped in with 10 kills and 14 digs. Wells also finished with a .469 attacking percentage and five service aces as the Eagles defeated WJU 30-22, 30-22, and 30-26.
The Eagles will resume GLVC play this Tuesday, October 15, as they travel to Owensboro, Kentucky to take on Kentucky Wesleyan College. USI will return home Saturday, October 19, as it hosts Quincy University at the Physical Activities Center. Tuesdayís match is slated for a 7 p.m. start while Saturdayís contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
