Wells earns GLVC “Player of the Year” honors,
Boehmer earns first-team All-GLVC/Gross nabs second-team honors

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—University of Southern Indiana volleyball senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) has earned Great Lakes Valley Conference “Player of the Year” honors, as announced Friday morning at the GLVC Championship Breakfast. It is the third time that a USI volleyball player has earned the honor—Sheri Kaiser (’93) earned GLVC “Player of the Year” honors in 1992 and 1993.

The GLVC also announced its 2002 All-GLVC teams, with Wells and junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) earning first-team honors and sophomore middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) earning second-team honors.

Wells led the GLVC during the regular season in kills (4.60 kpg) and service aces (1.19 sapg). Her career-high 3.91 digs per game were third in the league. In conference matches, Wells recorded 4.91 kills and 4.19 digs per game. It is the third straight season that Wells has earned first-team All-GLVC honors.

Boehmer also is on the first team for the third straight season after recording 12.45 assists and a career-high 2.68 digs per game during the regular season. Boehmer earned AVCA All-Region honors as a sophomore and is USI’s career-leader in assists (3,780).

Earning All-GLVC honors for the first time, Leeanne Gross averaged 3.13 kills and 2.54 digs per game to go along with a .309 attacking percentage. Gross also led the team in blocks (56) and was eighth during the regular season with 0.44 service aces per game.

In all, the three have helped the Eagles to a 23-7 overall record, 11-3 in the GLVC, and have the Eagles on the brink of an NCAA II Tournament berth. USI will face the University of Indianapolis Friday evening in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament in Romeoville, Illinois.

Lewis University’s Karen Lockyer was selected as the GLVC “Coach of the Year” while Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Heather Bond and Lewis’s Kathy Sulkowski were selected as co-GLVC “Freshmen of the Year.”
