Post-season honors roll in for USI volleyball,
Boehmer, Wells earn All-Region honors
University of Southern Indiana senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) and junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) have been named to the Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region volleyball team in a vote done by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Wells earned first-team honors and will be eligible to earn Daktronics All-America honors while Boehmer earned second-team honors.
Wells and Boehmer helped lead the Screaming Eagles to a 26-8 overall record and their first Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship as well as their first trip to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament. The Eagles finished the 2002 season with an 11-3 record in the GLVC and their third straight GLVC Green Division title.
It marks the second time in a week that Wells has been named first-team All-Region. She was named to the AVCA All-Region team last week. It is the third consecutive season that Wells has been named to the Daktronics All-Region team—she earned second-team honors as a sophomore and junior.
In addition to being named All-Region, Wells earned “Player of the Year” honors for the GLVC after leading the conference with 4.81 kills and 1.09 service aces per game. She also had a career-high 3.98 digs per game.
Wells’ performance in the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Tournament (5.29 kills and 4.29 digs per game) netted her All-Tournament honors. Wells finished her career at USI as the school’s all-time career leader in kills (1,866), digs (1,353), and service aces (319). She also ranks second all-time in career hitting percentage (.285) at USI.
A three-time All-GLVC performer and a first-team AVCA All-Region performer in 2001, Boehmer is earning Daktronics All-Region honors for the first time in her three-year career. She finished third in the conference with 12.74 assists per game and set a school record, for the third straight season, for assists in a season (1,491).
Boehmer is USI’s all-time leader in career assists (3,998). She also finished with a career-high 2.57 digs per game.
