Eagles hold off Hillsdale surge to wrap up perfect weekend
USI (10-2) def. West Virginia Wesleyan College (1-7) 30-24, 30-26, 30-11
USI def. Hillsdale College (7-5) 30-23, 30-21, 22-30, 25-30, 15-12
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team held off a late Hillsdale College rally to raise its record to 10-2 on the season. The Screaming Eagles won the first two matches, 30-23 and 30-21, before falling in games three and four, 30-22 and 30-25.
USI jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the fifth and final game, but found itself ahead late in the game by just two points at 11-9, before taking the deciding game 15-12.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles overcame a sluggish start to sweep West Virginia Wesleyan College, 30-24, 30-26, and 30-11.
Junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) led the Eagles with 33 kills while sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) chipped in 30 kills with a team-leading .490 attacking percentage.
Senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded 98 assists to lead USI’s attack to a .277 team hitting percentage. She also had a team-high 31 digs, 21 of which came in USI’s win over Hillsdale, as the Eagles finished the weekend with a 4-0 record.
The Eagles will open conference play next Friday, September 19, when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on the University of Missouri St. Louis. USI will play Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday, September 13, before opening up its home schedule Friday, September 26, with the University of Indianapolis.

USI volleyball holds off Ferris State,
Sweeps Fairmont State
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team held off a late rally by Ferris State University to record a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon at the Great Lakes Regional Crossover in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles followed the win with a 3-0 victory over Fairmont State University later in the evening. (more)
