USI volleyball wins in five at UW-Parkside

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team used a 61-assist, 18-dig performance from senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) to edge the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the DeSimone Gymnasium in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Screaming Eagles improve to 15-6 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC while the Rangers fall to 10-10 overall and 3-4 in the GLVC.
With the 61 assists, Boehmer now needs just 83 more to reach 5,000 for her career. She recorded 56 assists Friday night against Lewis University.
USI hit just .122 as a team in the first game as it lost 30-26 and fell behind in the match 1-0. The Eagles hit .455 and .311, respectively, in games two and three as they won 30-20 and 30-17 to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
After falling 32-30 in game four, USI won the deciding game 15-12 to defeat the Rangers for the fifth straight time.
A night after recording her 1,000th career assist, junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) followed up with a team-leading 21 kills to go along with 12 digs and 3 blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) recorded 15 kills, 4 service aces, and 3 blocks while senior outside hitter Ashley Riordan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) chipped in 13 kills and 9 digs.
Junior middle hitter Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky) and freshman outside hitter Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) added 11 and 12 kills, respectively. Atzinger finished with 14 digs.
The Eagles will return home this Tuesday, October 14, to take on Kentucky Wesleyan College in a 7 p.m. match at the Physical Activities Center. That match is USI Varsity Club Day for the volleyball team.
