USI volleyball to host KWC for USI Varsity Club Day
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will have its annual Varsity Club Day Tuesday when the Screaming Eagles host Kentucky Wesleyan College in a 7 p.m. match at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (15-6, 4-4 GLVC) has won 29 of its last 30 matches with the Panthers dating back to 1989. The Eagles have won 17 straight matches in the series, including 28 straight games. Since 1989, the Eagles have posted a 51-5 game-record in the 30 matches against KWC.
After USI’s match with KWC, the Eagles will get a much-needed 10 day break before traveling to Quincy, Illinois, to take on Quincy University.
While it is unlikely it will happen Tuesday night, senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) needs just 87 assists to reach her 5,000th career assist. Boehmer is fourth in the GLVC with 11.94 assists per game.
Two of Boehmer’s main targets will also be on display Tuesday. Sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) is second in the league in hitting percentage (.373) and ninth in kills per game (3.30 kpg), while junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) leads the league with 0.47 service aces per game, is fifth in the GLVC in hitting percentage (.320), and is eighth in the league in kills per game (3.74 kpg).
Gross, who recorded her 1,000th career kill last Friday, needs just one kill to move into fifth place all-time at USI. She also needs just two service aces to move into USI’s top five in career service aces.
Currently, the Eagles are third in the GLVC Green Division standings. trailing Quincy University by a game and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville by three games. USI plays SIUE at the PAC on Halloween.
