Eagles come up short at Quincy,
Boehmer, Gross move up in record books
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team lost a hard-fought match Friday night as it fell to Quincy University, 3-2, at the Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles fall to 16-7 overall and 5-5 in the GLVC while the Lady Hawks improve to 15-8 overall and 6-3 in the GLVC.
After cruising to an easy 30-20 win in game one, the Eagles stormed out to take a 10-2 lead in the second game. USI, however, could not hold the lead as Quincy took game two, 31-29. The Eagles hitting percentage fell from .424 in the first game to .182 in game two.
Despite hitting just .096 in game three, the Eagles managed to win the third set 30-24 and take a 2-1 advantage in the match. However, USIís hitting percentage got worse throughout the match as it hit just .085 and .032 in the fourth and fifth games, respectively.
Consequently, the Eagles saw their lead in the match disappear as the Lady Hawks won the fourth game 30-26, forcing a decisive fifth game.
Game five saw the Eagles rally from a 14-10 deficit to cut the lead to 14-13. However, Quincy held on to win the game 15-13 and defeat USI for the second time this season.
On an individual note, USI senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded her 1,000th assist of the season, marking the fourth straight season she has reached 1,000. Her match-high 59 assists also lifted her into fifth-place all-time in GLVC history with 4,998 career assists.
Boehmerís top target Friday night, junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana), also moved up in the record books. Gross, who finished with a team-high 17 kills, moved into fifth-place all-time in career service aces (124).
USI wraps up its 2003 home schedule next Friday and Saturday, October 31-November 1, when it hosts GLVC front-runner Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Saturdayís match against UMSL is Senior Day for the Eagles and starts at 2 p.m. while Fridayís match against SIUE will begin at 7 p.m.
