USI volleyball falls in three at NKU
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team took one on the chin Friday night as Northern Kentucky University handed the Screaming Eagles a 30-20, 30-22, 30-24 loss at Regents Hall in Highland Heights, Kentucky. USI falls to 18-8 overall and 7-6 in the GLVC while the Norse improve to 22-10 and a league-best 12-2 in the GLVC.
Defensively, the Eagles were taken apart as the Norse racked up a .395 attacking percentage, including a .567 hitting percentage in the second game.
USI hit .242 as a team, led by the performances of junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana). Gross finished with a match-high 17 kills and a .457 attacking percentage while Ellerbusch chipped in 11 kills and hit .364.
Senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) moved into third all-time in GLVC history for career assists as she recorded 42 assists in the loss. She now has 5,131 assists in her career.
USI will close its regular season Saturday when it travels to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University. The Screaming Eagles are still fighting for the fifth seed in next weekend’s GLVC Tournament.
