Eagles storm past Lady Hawks,
Advance to GLVC semifinals with 20th victory
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team stormed past Quincy University in the first round of the GLVC Tournament Thursday evening at Regents Hall in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles took the first game 30-22 and the second game 30-28 before closing the match with a 30-21 victory.
USI (20-8), which had fallen twice during the regular season to Quincy, used quick starts in both the first and third games and used a 12-7 run to take control of the second game as it won its 20th match of the season. It marks the fourth straight season the Eagles have recorded 20 or more victories.
Sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) recorded a match-high 15 kills and a .636 attacking percentage to lead USIís attack. Ellerbusch added a match-high six blocks in the victory.
Senior outside hitter Ashley Riordan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and freshman outside hitter Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) recorded 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded 50 assists to set USIís offensive to a .296 team attacking percentage. Riordan recorded a .423 attacking percentage in the winning effort.
USI, which entered the tournament as the fifth seed, will play the winner of the University of Missouri-St. Louis-Northern Kentucky University match. NKU enters the tournament as the top seed, while UMSL enters the tournament as the eighth seed. USIís match is slated for a 6:30 p.m. (CST) start Friday night at Regents Hall.
Quincy, which entered the tournament as the fourth seed, has its season end with an 18-11 record. Earlier in the day, the third seed, University of Indianapolis, defeated the sixth seed, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 3-0. The second seed, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, also recorded a first-round victory, topping the seventh seed, Lewis University, 3-1.
