USI volleyball releases 2005 schedule,
Defending champs have tough slate
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The defending GLVC champion University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will waste little time finding tough competition as it opens its 2005 schedule August 26 at the Missouri Southern Invitational in Joplin, Missouri.
USI, which was 24-7 overall and 15-1 in the GLVC last season, faces three teams that participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2004 during its opening weekend. In all, the Screaming Eagles have 10 matches against teams that were in the NCAA II Tournament a year ago.
The Eagles play the NCAA II runner-up September 3 when they take on Truman State University in the Cougar Classic in Edwardsville, Illinois. They also are slated for a home-and-home series against the 2003 NCAA II champion University of North Alabama.
Defense of the Eagles’ conference title begins September 16 when USI travels to Springfield, Missouri, to take on new league member Drury University to start GLVC play. A day later, the Eagles travel to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst University, another new member of the GLVC, in what could be a battle for league supremacy. Rockhurst also participated in the NCAA II Tournament in 2004.
USI opens its home schedule September 21 against North Alabama and opens its conference home schedule September 30 against Rockhurst. The Eagles play 10 home matches during the regular season.
Other key match-ups in 2005 include a home-and-home series with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, last year’s runner-up in the GLVC regular season and GLVC Tournament, and a home match against rival Northern Kentucky University. The Eagles travel to Romeoville, Illinois, October 8 to take on Lewis University, the only GLVC squad to defeat USI in 2004.
Senior Day is scheduled for November 5 when the Eagles host the University of Indianapolis to close out the 2005 regular season. The GLVC Tournament, which is played on the campus of the number one seed, is November 10-12, while the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Tournament is November 17-20. The NCAA II Elite Eight is December 1-4.
