EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team suffered a 14-30, 32-34, 28-30 setback to the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Tuesday night at the Vadalabene Center.
USI (10-8, 2-2 GLVC) committed seven unforced attacking errors in the first game as it fell into an early hole.
The Screaming Eagles, who jumped out to early leads in every game, showed improvement in the second frame, but could not overcome a Cougar attack that scored 24 points off kills.
In game three, the Eagles jumped out to an early seven-point lead. However, the Cougars (12-5, 2-2 GLVC) were able to inch their way back into the game, using an 8-4 run to turn the tide in the final set. USI fought off two match points, but could not fight off the crucial third match point as the Cougars snapped a four-match losing streak to the Eagles.
Junior outside hitter Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana) and junior libero Mandy Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) led the Eagles in the loss. Doubler finished with eight kills and a .333 attacking percentage, while Probst racked up a match-high 19 kills.
USI hit just .147 in the match, while the Cougars amassed a .282 attacking percentage.
The Eagles return home to take on No. 20 Rockhurst University Friday at 7 p.m. They finish their weekend slate Saturday at 2 p.m. against Drury University at the Physical Activities Center.
