Eagles facing crucial rematch with Cougars
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team is hosting Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Physical Activities Center in a crucial GLVC rematch.
USI (15-11, 7-4 GLVC) is in desperate need of a victory over the Cougars if the Screaming Eagles want a chance move up in the GLVC standings and remain in the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional picture.
Currently, the Eagles are in fifth place in the league standings and tied for eighth in the regional rankings, while SIUE (18-5, 8-2 GLVC) is second in the conference standings and third in the region.
The Eagles also want to erase a tough 3-0 setback to the Cougars from earlier in the season. SIUE took advantage of a slow start by the Eagles in the first match to post the 30-14, 34-32, 30-28 victory.
USI has five matches remaining on its 2005 regular-season schedule, including a date with the fourth-place University of Indianapolis Greyhounds.
A win over the Cougars Tuesday night could get the Eagles on a roll as they head into the conference tournament, which is hosted by the conference's number one seed November 10-12.
Leading the Eagles into Tuesday's match is senior middle blocker Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) and junior outside hitter Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana). Ellerbusch leads the Eagles with a .290 attacking percentage and 1.09 blocks per game, while Ryan is averaging a team-best 3.59 kills per game.
Sophomore setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) is averaging a team-best 12.18 assists per game, while junior libero Mandy Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) is averaging a team-high 3.86 digs per game.
The Eagles travel to St. Louis Friday to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 7 p.m., before finishing their weekend slate Saturday in Quincy, Illinois, to take on Quincy University at 2 p.m.
