Eagles picked to finish fifth in GLVC
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team has been picked to finish fifth in the GLVC in a vote by the league's coaches.
Northern Kentucky University edged defending GLVC regular-season champion Rockhurst University for first-place, while defending GLVC Tournament champion Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the University of Indianapolis were tied for third in the poll.
Under the direction of second-year Head Coach Leah Mercer '02, USI returns five starters and its libero from a squad that was 19-13 overall, 11-5 in the GLVC, in 2005.
Leading the way for the Screaming Eagles are senior outside hitters Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) and Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana) in addition to senior libero/outside hitter Mandy Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) and junior setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana).
Ryan and Wilson were first-team All-GLVC performers a year ago, while both have earned AVCA All-Region honors in the last two years. Probst was second-team All-GLVC in 2004, while Doubler was honorable mention All-GLVC last season.
The Eagles open practice today in preparation for their season-opening match August 25 against Edinboro University in Pensacola, Florida.
