Eagles picked third in GLVC West Division

2007 Season Outlook

EVANSVILLE, Ind.The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team was picked to finish third in the GLVC West Division in a vote by the division's head coaches.

USI, which received 26 points in the poll, was 17-11 overall and 9-7 in the GLVC a year ago. The Eagles were sixth in the GLVC regular-season standings before falling to Lewis University in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.

This season marks the first year of divisional play in the GLVC since the 2003 campaign. With the addition of first-year program University of Missouri-Rolla, the conference will feature seven teams in each division.

The GLVC West Division is comprised of USI, Drury University, Missouri-Rolla, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Quincy University, Rockhurst University, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

SIU Edwardsville, the 2006 GLVC regular-season champion, received six first-place votes and was picked first in the poll, while Rockhurst notched one first-place vote and was picked second. Missouri-St. Louis and Drury were picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while Quincy and Missouri-Rolla rounded out the poll.

USI plays a home-and-away series with each team from the West Division, while it plays each team in the East Division once in 2007.

The GLVC East Division is comprised of Bellarmine University, the University of Indianapolis, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Lewis University, Northern Kentucky University, Saint Joseph's College, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Lewis University, the 2006 GLVC Tournament champion, received five first-place votes and was picked first in the East, while Northern Kentucky and Indianapolis were tied for second in the poll. Bellarmine and Wisconsin-Parkside were picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while Saint Joseph's and Kentucky Wesleyan rounded out the poll.

USI opens preseason practice Tuesday, August 7 and will practice twice a day. Practice times are 9-11:30 a.m. and 3-5:30 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center. The Eagles open the season August 24-25, while their GLVC slate begins September 7.
