EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team bounced back from a two-match losing streak by defeating the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 30-19, 31-29, 30-22 Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (10-9, 5-6 GLVC) gained a convincing victory in the first set when it attacked at a clip of .341, while holding the Rangers to an attacking percentage of .054. The Screaming Eagles used runs of 11-5 and 8-3 to open a lead as large as 11 points in the first game en route to taking a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Eagles held off a furious come-back bid after gaining a five-point lead late in the second game. UW-Parkside (8-8, 2-8 GLVC), which took No. 18 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to five games Friday night, rallied from a 25-20 deficit to forge a 29-29 tie. USI, however, got back-to-back kills from freshman outside hitter Brittani Oliver
(Indianapolis, Indiana) to stop the come-back bid and give the Eagles a comfortable 2-0 lead.
In game three, the Eagles used a 6-0 run to overcome a one-point deficit and swing momentum into their favor. USI, which simply outdistanced the Rangers in building a lead as large as nine points in the third game, held UW-Parkside to a mere .024 attacking percentage in the final set to seal the victory.
Oliver, along with senior middle blocker Molly Rahman
(Ferdinand, Indiana), led the Eagles with 14 and 16 kills, respectively. Oliver racked up a sizzling .542 attacking percentage, while Rahman attacked at a .375 clip.
USI also benefitted from a strong outing out of junior middle blocker Meg Buschman
(Reynolds, Indiana), who finished with 11 kills and a .292 attacking percentage. Senior setter Stephanie Wilson
(Terre Haute, Indiana) recorded a double-double with 45 assists and 13 digs as she set the Eagles to a team attacking percentage of .289, their highest total in the last nine matches.
Sophomore right side hitter/setter Melanie Pund
(Ferdinand, Indiana) tallied 16 digs as the Eagles' libero, while sophomore outside hitter Courtney Bealor
(LaPorte, Indiana) finished with eight kills and 11 digs.
The Eagles continue their four-match homestand Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College at the PAC.
