ROLLA, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team bounced back from a 26-24, 25-17, 25-22 loss to No. 17 Pittsburg State University by trouncing Southwestern Oklahoma State University 25-16, 25-21, 25-16 Saturday afternoon at the "Middle of Everywhere" Classic.
USI (2-2) attacked at a blistering .407 clip in the first set against Southwestern Oklahoma State (0-4) to set the tone for the match.
Sophomore outside hitter Brittani Oliver
(Indianapolis, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles with 12 kills and a .423 attacking percentage, while junior setter Melanie Pund
(Ferdinand, Indiana) racked up 31 assists to lead the Eagles' offense.
Junior outside hitter Courtney Bealor
(LaPorte, Indiana) and sophomore libero Janae Curnutt
(Arcadia, Indiana) had 16 and 14 digs, respectively, to lead the Eagles' defensive effort. Senior middle blocker Margaret Buschman
(Reynolds, Indiana) led the USI's front row players with a match-high five blocks, while Curnutt racked up a match-high four service aces.
Against Pittsburg State (3-0), the Eagles saw a four-point lead in the first set slip away as the Gorillas charged back to take a 1-0 lead in the match. USI controlled the early portion of the third set, but a mix-up in USI's serving rotation resulted in a four-point swing that turned momentum into the opposition's favor.
Three USI players finished with the team lead in kills (7), while Buschman had six kills a .545 attacking percentage to lead the Eagles' attack. Pund added 29 assists and tied Curnutt and Bealor for the team lead in digs (11).
The Eagles return to action Friday when they open the University of Missouri-St. Louis Invite with No. 2 Washburn University and Maryville University. They also take on the Colorado School of Mines and Missouri Western State University the following day.
