Eagles sweep Maryville after falling to #2 Washburn

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team blasted Maryville University in 25-11, 25-16, 25-16 Friday afternoon at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Invitational after falling to No. 2 Washburn University 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 earlier in the day.
In the first set against Maryville (1-6), the Screaming Eagles attacked at a blistering .429 clip to claim a one-game lead and set the tone for the match. USI (3-3), which hit .319 overall, hit .344 in game three to close the match.
Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Johnson
(Newburgh, Indiana) had a career-high 10 kills to lead the Eagles' offensive attack, while junior setter Melanie Pund
(Ferdinand, Indiana) had five kills, a .625 attacking percentage, and 33 assists. Sophomore libero Janae Curnutt
(Arcadia, Indiana) led the Eagles with 10 digs in the victory.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles saw themselves on the opposite end of a 10-0 run and a 6-0 run that allowed Washburn (5-0) to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Eagles, behind a solid effort from senior middle blocker Margaret Buschman
(Reynolds, Indiana), found themselves down by one late in the third set, but a 4-0 run gave the Lady Blues the 25-20 victory and closed the door on any chance for a USI upset.
Buschman led the Eagles with eight kills and a .318 attacking percentage, while Curnutt had 10 digs in the loss. Buschman also had six kills and a .600 attacking percentage in the win over Maryville.
USI finishes the UMSL Invitational Saturday when it takes on the Colorado School of Mines at 11:30 a.m. and Missouri Western State University at 2 p.m.
