Eagles take down CSM in five sets,
Fight off tough MWSU squad in four

ST. LOUIS, Mo.The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team fought back from a one-game deficit to defeat the Colorado School of Mines 25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-9 Saturday afternoon at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Invitational.

USI (5-3) completed the two-day classic-style tournament with a 26-24, 23-25, 25-27, 25-20 victory over Missouri Western State University later in the day.

Jaclyn Johnson



Junior outside hitter Jaclyn Johnson (Newburgh, Indiana) recorded a pair of double-doubles to lead the Screaming Eagles. Johnson had a career-high 19 kills and 13 digs in the win over CSM before recording 12 kills, a career-high 15 digs, and five blocks in the win over MWSU.

Junior setter Melanie Pund (Ferdinand, Indiana) also had a big day, racking up 46 assists and five blocks against CSM as well as 45 assists against MWSU.

Janae Curnutt


Led by sophomore libero Janae Curnutt (Arcadia, Indiana) and senior middle blocker Margaret Buschman (Reynolds, Indiana), USI's defense was solid in both matches. Curnutt racked up a match-high 23 digs in both matches, while Buschman had eight blocks against CSM and five blocks against MWSU.

Against CSM, USI also got 12 kills and a .370 attacking clip from junior right-side hitter Kathi Hindman (Carmi, Indiana) as well as 14 digs from junior outside hitter Courtney Bealor (LaPorte, Indiana).

Hindman and Bealor combined for 21 kills against MWSU, while Buschman had 12 kills to aid the Eagles' attack. Freshman middle blocker Taylor Reed (Toledo, Ohio) had a team-best six blocks in USI's second match, while Bealor helped the defensive effort with 18 digs.

The Eagles open their GLVC schedule with their first home match of the season when they host Missouri University of Science and Technology Friday at 7 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.
