Eagles fall to #24 UIndy in three sets

#24 Indianapolis (12-3, 5-1 GLVC): 3
at Southern Indiana (6-7, 1-4 GLVC): 0
Line score: 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 (Box Score)

EVANSVILLE, Ind.The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team lost to the No. 24-ranked University of Indianapolis Greyhounds 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 Tuesday night at the Physical Activities Center.

The Screaming Eagles (6-7, 1-4 GLVC) battled back from large deficits in all three sets to make things interesting, but the Greyhounds used a .314 attacking percentage, including clips of .356 and .355 in the second and third frames, respectively, to hand USI its fourth straight setback.

Indianapolis (12-3, 5-1 GLVC) also held a 51-33 advantage in kills to pick up the victory.

In the opening set, the Eagles overcame a five-point deficit to force an 18-18 tie late in the frame. The Greyhounds, however, went on a 5-1 run from that point to build a comfortable cushion and pull out the three-point victory.

USI used a 6-0 run to tie the second set at 21-21, but saw the Greyhounds use a 4-2 stretch to close out the game and build a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

A 4-0 USI run tied the third set at 18, but once again, Indianapolis used a small spurt to kill the Eagles' momentum and close out the match in three sets.

The Eagles were led by junior outside hitter Courtney Bealor (LaPorte, Indiana), who had a match-high 12 kills as well as a .321 attacking percentage. Junior setter Melanie Pund (Ferdinand, Indiana) added 26 assists and 16 digs in the loss.

Sophomore outside hitter Brittani Oliver (Indianapolis, Indiana) chipped in 12 digs, while sophomore libero Janae Curnutt (Arcadia, Indiana) added 10 digs for the Eagles, who had a 50-45 advantage in that category.

The Screaming Eagles look to rebound Friday night when they host long-time nemesis Northern Kentucky University at seven o'clock at the PAC. USI also hosts Saint Joseph's College Saturday at 3 p.m.
