Eagles fall to Saginaw Valley in straight sets

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Saginaw Valley State University pinned a 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 setback on the Screaming Eagles Friday evening at the Asics GLVC/GLIAC Crossover.
Saginaw Valley State (17-4), which hit .301 for the match, jumped out to a 10-6 lead early in the first set; than used a 4-0 run to turn a one-point advantage into an 18-13 cushion before taking the four-point win in the opening frame.
USI (11-11) had a three-point edge midway through the second stanza, but once again, a SVSU run—this time a 6-1 stretch—put the Eagles in a whole they could not recover from.
In the final frame, the Eagles battled back from an early 5-0 deficit to tie the match at 6-6; but a 51 percent side-out clip by USI in the third game allowed the Cardinals to push points and eventually gain a comfortable six-point lead before settling for the 25-19 match-clinching victory.
