USI shuts out Drury in volleyball, 3-0

-- The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team got back to the .500 mark with a 3-0 shutout of Drury University Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record to 13-13 overall and 6-7 in the GLVC, while Drury falls to 10-15 overall, 6-7 GLVC.
The win puts USI into a third place tie with Drury in the GLVC West Division.
USI was led in the match by sophomore outside hitter Brittani Oliver
(Indianapolis, Indiana) and junior outside hitter Courtney Bealor
(LaPorte, Indiana), who combined for 24 of the Screaming Eagles' 40 kills. Oliver had a team-best 13 kills to go with seven digs and a block assist for 13.5 points, while Bealor had 11 kills along with 10 digs and three block assists for an identical 13.5 points.
Junior setter Melanie Pund
(Ferdinand, Indiana) paced the Eagles with 24 sets, helping USI to a .243 hitting percentage as a team.
To earn the shutout, the Eagles won a pair of back-and-forth battles that were sandwiched around a seven-point win.
The Eagles never led by more than four points in the opening set before grinding out a 25-23 win. The squads resumed the point-for-point battle in the second when USI went on a 10-3 run to close out the middle set, 25-18.
In the final set, USI had to come from behind to preserve the shutout. The Panthers had set point three times (24-21, 24-22, and 24-23) before the Eagles regained control to win 28-26 and take the match 3-0.
The Eagles conclude the 2008 home schedule next weekend when they host Quincy University for a pair of matches. USI and Quincy are scheduled for a 7 p.m. contest Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. match-up Saturday. The Saturday match will be Senior Day for the Eagles.
