Buschman leads Eagles to 3-0 victory over Quincy

EVANSVILLE, Ind.Senior middle blocker Margaret Buschman had 14 kills and a blistering .824 attacking percentage to lead the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team to a dominating 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 victory over visiting Quincy University Friday night at the Physical Activities Center.

Buschman set the tone in the first set when she hammered down six kills in seven attacking attempts to lead the Screaming Eagles to the opening-game win. Junior middle blocker Ashley Henricks (Greenwood, Indiana) had four kills and a .800 attacking clip in the first set as the Eagles attacked at a .382 pace as a team to gain the 1-0 advantage in the match.

Melanie Pund

Junior setter Melanie Pund (Ferdinand, Indiana), who finished the match with 32 assists, went to her outside hitter tandem of sophomore Brittani Oliver (Indianapolis, Indiana) and junior Courtney Bealor (LaPorte, Indiana) in the second set. Oliver and Bealor combined for eight kills and a .353 attacking percentage in the second stanza as USI cruised to the four-point win and a 2-0 lead in the contest.

The Eagles (14-13, 7-7 GLVC), who hit .361 for the match, rallied from a four-point deficit in the third set to close the contest out in three games. Buschman converted all five of her attacks into kills in the final frame as USI edged the Lady Hawks (12-17, 4-10 GLVC) to complete the three-game sweep.

In addition to Buschman's 14 kills, the Eagles got 11 kills from Oliver as well as eight kills and a .412 attacking percentage from junior right side hitter Kathi Hindman (Carmel, Indiana). Pund added six kills and a .667 hitting percentage, while Bealor and sophomore libero Janae Curnutt (Arcadia, Indiana) each had 10 digs.

USI, which has won two straight matches, finishes its 2008 home slate Saturday when it hosts Quincy at 2 p.m. The Eagles will honor Buschman prior to the match as part of their Senior Day festivities.
