USI wins second in row

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team, which broke a four-match losing streak on Saturday, won its second match in a row with a 3-2 (30-19, 30-22, 26-30, 22-30, 15-10) decision over New Haven University Sunday afternoon at the Amerihost Invitational in Allendale, Michigan. The tournament was hosted by Grand Valley State University.
The Screaming Eagles, 3-4 in 2001, jumped out to a 2-0 lead, 30-19 and 30-22, before New Haven tied the match at two with wins in games three and four. The Eagles won the deciding game 15-10. The five-game match was the second of the year for the Eagles.
Senior middle blocker Leah Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 27 kills, followed by the 18 kills performance of freshman middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana). Junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) was the only other USI player in double figures with 15 kills to go with 10 digs.
Sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) delivered the ball to the USI hitters with a season-high 57 assists, while junior outside hitter Kristy Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) gave USI six points on a team-high six aces.
Next weekend, the Eagles will travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky, to play in the GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament, hosted by Northern Kentucky University, Friday, September 7, and Saturday, September 8.
USIís first home match of the season will be on Monday, September 10, when Oakland City University visits the Physical Activities Center for a 7 p.m. match. The USI-OCU match will begin a six-match homestand for the Eagles.
