USI goes 1-1 in first day of GLVC-GLIAC

The University of Southern Indiana went 1-1 on
the first day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference-Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference Crossover. USI pushes its record to 4-5 with the split.
In in the first match, the Screaming Eagles used
20 kills from junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana)
to overcome a one-game deficit against Ferris State University. USI had jumped
out to a commanding 21-14 lead in the first game, but lost control as the
Bulldogs stormed back to tie the match at 30-30. The Eagles took control in the
next three games to take the match 3-1.
Sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati,
Ohio) recorded a match-high 46 assists while junior middle blocker Leah
Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) contributed 13 kills and a team-high 12 digs.
After recording 68 kills against FSU, the Eagles
were limited to just 40 against 21st-ranked Northern Michigan University in
USI's second match of the day. The Wildcats hit .325 as a team while limiting
the Eagles to a .211 attacking percentage.
Mercer and freshman middle blocker Leeanne Gross
(Decatur, Indiana) each recorded a team-high 10 kills.
USI was tough in games one and three, but could
not get past NMU as the Wildcats handed the Eagles a 3-0 defeat. USI will play
eighth-ranked Northwood University tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. central time.
