USI sweeps OCU, 3-0
University of Southern Indiana (6-5): 3
Oakland City University (3-4): 0
Game Scores: 30-17, 30-3, 30-15
The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team won its second in a row and for the fifth time in six matches with a convincing 3-0 victory (30-17, 30-3, 30-15) over Oakland City University Monday night at the Physical Activities Center.
After OCU took a 1-0 lead in game one, the Screaming Eagles blew past the Might Oaks and never trailed again in the match. USI raises its record to 6-5 overall after starting the season at 1-4. OCU falls to 3-4 in 2001.
Junior outside hitters Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) and Kristy Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) led the Eagles statistically. Wells posted 10 kills, five aces, seven digs, and two solo blocks, while Kavanaugh had 13 kills and nine digs.
As a team, the Eagles had 44 total kills off the 41 assist performance of sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio). Boehmer, who has had 172 assists in the last four matches (43 per game), has 1,541 assists in just two seasons and needs just 18 more to move into fourth all-time at USI.
The Eagles will open the Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Friday, September 14, when Quincy University visits the PAC for a 7 p.m. match. USI had its best season in the GLVC last year when it was 14-2 in the league and hosted its first-ever GLVC Tournament.
