USI falls on the road 3-2 to SIUE

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team fell in five games at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 3-2, in Edwardsville, Illinois, Wednesday night. The loss marks the third time this season the Screaming Eagles have fallen to the Cougars.
USI's record falls to 13-8 overall, 7-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while SIUE goes to 12-10 overall, 7-3 GLVC. The win pushes SIUE past USI and into first place in the GLVC Green Division.
The match went back and forth as it had the first two matches with SIUE winning game one 30-26 game three, 30-25 and game five 15-12. USI won the second game 30-18 and the fourth game 30-24.
On the 17th of her team-high 37 assists, sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) passed the 2,000 career-assist mark, becoming only the third player in team history to reach that milestone. At 2020 assists, Boehmer needs just 650 to become USI's all-time leader.
On the offensive side, USI was led by junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) with 26 kills and seven aces. The seven aces brought Wells to within five aces of becoming USI's all-time leader. Junior outside hitter Kristi Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) led the Eagles defensively with 13 digs.
The Eagles will play outside of the GLVC this weekend when they travel back to SIUE for the Cougar Classic Friday and Saturday, October 12-13. USI will play its final home match when it resumes GLVC action by hosting Saint Joseph's College Saturday, October 20.
