Eagles reach 19th win with 3-0 victory at Kentucky Wesleyan

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team recorded its 19th victory of the season this afternoon as it topped Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3-0, in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles improve to 19-8 overall and 10-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Panthers fall to 2-15 overall and 0-12 in the GLVC.
USI used a dominating performance in game-one to gain a 1-0 lead in the match. The Eagles recorded a .400 attacking percentage in the first game as they breezed to a 30-12 win.
A .293 attacking percentage and a .220 attacking percentage in games two and three, respectively, assisted the Eagles to a pair of 30-20 wins. For the match, USI hit .303 as a team and held KWC to a .061 attacking percentage.
Senior middle blocker Leah Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) led all attackers with 18 kills while committing just two errors in 32 attempts (.500). Mercer also added nine digs and two block assists in the win.
Junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) was solid in the performance as she came up with 11 kills and a match-high .526 attacking percentage while posting four service aces.
Freshman middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) tapped in with 12 kills and a match-high 13 digs while sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a match-high 45 assists.
The Eagles will play a pair of pivotal matches next weekend as they close out their regular season. USI will be at Northern Kentucky University Friday, November 2 (6 p.m.), and at the University of Indianapolis Saturday, November 3 (1 p.m.). Both matches will have GLVC Tournament and NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Tournament implications.
