Wells propels Eagles past Cougars and into GLVC Championship

Junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) recorded a match-high 25 kills to go along with 10 digs as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team recorded a 3-1 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville this afternoon at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
The win propels the Screaming Eagles into the GLVC Championships match for the second consecutive season. USI will play the winner of the Quincy University-Northern Kentucky University match, Saturday at 11 a.m. CST, for the right to advance to the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Tournament.
USI fell behind in the match, 0-1, despite a furious comeback in game one. The Eagles came back from a 14-25 deficit to tie the game at 29-29, only to fall 29-31.
The Eagles pulled away in game two to even the match at 1-1. USI held the Cougars to a .027 attacking percentage in the second frame as it took the game 30-22.
USI dominated games three and four as it posted a combined .385 attacking percentage while holding SIUE to a combined .130 attacking percentage. The Eagles won game three, 30-21, and game four, 30-16.
Sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a match-high 62 assists as the Eagles hit a combined .297 for the match. Boehmer also recorded 12 digs in the winning effort.
Freshman middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) posted 18 kills and 13 digs. Senior middle blocker Leah Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) added 14 kills and 13 digs while junior outside hitter Kristi Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) tapped in with 10 kills and a match-high 15 digs.
