Former SIU Carbondale guard transferring to USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team announced that 5'5" sophomore guard
Ellen Young (Salem, Illinois) has signed to play for Head Coach
Rick Stein's Screaming Eagles in 2008-09.
Young transfers from Southern Illinois University Carbondale where she was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman team after averaging 11.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in 2007-08.
A starter in nine of the Saluki's 30 games last season, Young was third on the team and 13th in the MVC in scoring. She also was third in the MVC in three-point field goal percentage (.408) and eighth in made three-pointers per game (1.77).
In 2007-08, Young scored in double figures 20 times and reached the 20-point plateau five times. She scored a season-high 26 points against Austin Peay University and notched a double-double against Drake University when she scored 14 points and brought down a season-high 10 rebounds.
A graduate of Salem Community High School, Young was a four-time All-Apollo Conference performer and three-time All-State honoree. She holds SCHS's career scoring record for both boys and girls basketball with 2,498 career points.
As a senior at SCHS, Young averaged 25 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game and was named first-team All-State by the
Champaign News Gazette, the Southern Illinois Coaches' Association, and the Illinois Basketball Coaches' Association. She also was the three-time
Centralia Sentinel AA Player of the Year.
"We are excited to have Ellen as a part of our team and the University of Southern Indiana," Stein said. "Ellen is an explosive guard who can get to the rim and can spread the defense from three-point range.
"Ellen was a high-impact player as a freshman this year and will make an immediate impact on our program," Stein added.
Young joins 5'4" freshman guard
Rinesha Soaper (Henderson, Kentucky), 5'10 freshman forward
Taylor Miller (Pendleton Heights, Indiana), and 6'0" junior guard/forward
Abby Williams (St. Joseph, Illinois) on USI's list of incoming players for the 2008-09 season.
