GLVC basketball coaches pick USI men third and women fourth

The Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball coaches have picked the University of Southern Indiana menís team to place third and the womenís team to finish fourth at the end of the 2002-03 league schedules.

The USI womenís team returns five players, two starters, from a team that was 27-6 overall, won the GLVC Tournament Championship, and was 16-4 in the GLVC regular season. Senior forward/center Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), an honorable mention All-GLVC selection last spring, will lead the squad into 2002-03 after averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds a contest last season.

In addition to Sherrod, USI Head Coach Rick Stien enters the season looking for leadership from senior guard Bethany Miller (Princeton, Indiana) and senior guard/forward Sarah McIntosh (Cabery, Illinois). Miller will move into the point guard position this fall, while USI hopes McIntosh has the same hot hand she finished with in 2001-02.

The USI menís team, who was ranked eighth in the preseason by Division II Bulletin/NABC, was 22-8 last year, tied for third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, and finished fourth in the GLVC regular season with a 14-6 mark. Head Coach Rick Herdes returns six players, three starters, and has 12 newcomers.

Leading the way for USI is the sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore forward Dennis Coutee (Jeffersonville, Indiana). Brunson was the GLVC Freshman of the Year and averaged 13.4 points per game, while Coutee is a honorable mention Street & Smithís College Basketball Preseason All-American who averaged 19.8 points and 6.0 rebounds for Riverside Community College last year.

The GLVC coaches selected Kentucky Wesleyan College to win the menís title, while Northern Kentucky University was picked to win the womenís crown.
