USI women’s basketball nabs JUCO signee
The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team announced Thursday that 6’0” forward/center Andrea Engleking (Charlottesville, Indiana) has signed a letter of intent for the 2003-04 season. Engleking is the third player to sign with Head Coach Rick Stein’s Screaming Eagles this fall.
Engleking is currently a sophomore at Kankakee Community College in Kankakee, Illinois where she was a member of the NJCAA Region IV championship team. She averaged 14.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.6 steals in 35 games as a freshman at KCC.
“Andrea is one of the most solid players and people that have come through this program,” KCC head coach Donnie Denson said. “She is an all-around player and an all-around person that will give 110 percent everyday.”
A NJCAA second-team All-Region performer, Engleking set a KCC record by connecting on 121 free throws during her freshman campaign.
A graduate of Eastern Hancock High School, Engleking averaged 20.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. She was an All-Conference selection three times and an All-County and All-State performer twice. Engleking also was selected as the co-County Player of the Year and was a member of the Reebok All-Star team.
Her efforts at EHHS did not go unnoticed as she was named one of the top 40 Indiana athletes by Gary Donna of Hoosier Basketball Magazine. She set school records for points in a game (40), points in a single-season (488), and career points (1,182). She led EHHS to a section championship in 2001.
“Andrea is a nice athlete who has excellent skills at her position,” Stein said. “She scores in the low blocks as well as from 15 feet. Andrea also is a good passer from anywhere on the court and is used to playing pressure man-to-man defense.”
Engleking will have two years of eligibility at USI beginning next season.
