USI women’s basketball set to tip-off with Indiana State
As the start of the 2002-03 season draws closer, the ninth-ranked University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team will be looking to get off to a good start as it travels to Terre Haute, Indiana, to take on NCAA Division I Indiana State University in an exhibition contest Saturday, November 16. Tip-off is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
The Screaming Eagles are coming off a season of a season in which they posted a 27-6 overall record, 16-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and won their second straight GLVC Tournament crown. USI is returning two starters from that squad, including All-GLVC performer Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida).
Sherrod is USI’s top returning scorer and rebounder after averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game during the 2001-02 season. She also earned GLVC “Player of the Week” honors two straight weeks.
Senior guard Bethany Miller (Princeton, Indiana) also returns to the Eagles after starting 11 games as a junior. Miller averaged 2.2 points and 2.2 assists during her junior campaign and is looking to enter the top five at USI in career assists and steals.
The Eagles would like to see senior guard/forward Sarah McIntosh (Cabery, Illinois) pick up where she left off last season. McIntosh averaged 7.3 points in her last seven games, including a season-high 16 points against Bellarmine University during the last week of the season and 15 points against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the GLVC Tournament.
Also adding to the mix will be sophomore guards Amber Calhoun (Evansville, Indiana) and April Williams (Lyons, Indiana). Both saw limited playing time during their freshmen campaigns, but could be key factors in USI’s arsenal this season.
USI also will have seven newcomers in 2002-03. The Eagles have two junior college transfers on their roster as well as four freshmen. They also will add USI volleyball standout Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) at the conclusion of the volleyball season.
The Eagles are facing Indiana State in an exhibition game for the second consecutive season. The Eagles lost last season’s contest 94-56.
USI will open its 2002-03 season at the Carson-Newman College Tournament in Jefferson City, Tennessee, next Friday, November 22. USI will face Carson-Newman to open the tournament and 22nd-ranked Mars Hill College Saturday, November 23.
