The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team had its loosing streak reach four games Thursday evening as it fell to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 67-59, at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles fall to 6-13 overall, 4-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Cougars improve to 9-9 overall, 5-6 in the GLVC.
After jumping out to a seven-point advantage with four minutes to play in the first stanza, the Eagles saw the Cougars put together an 11-3 run to close the half and take the lead. USI shot 34.6 percent from the floor in the first period as it went into the break trailing, 28-27.
Trailing by four with just over 15 minutes to play in the contest, the Eagles reeled off a 9-1 run to take a 42-38 lead with less than 12 minutes left in regulation. However, the Eagles’ offense sputtered, allowing the Cougars to record a 9-2 run and reclaim the lead.
USI got to within a point, but could not get any closer as it fell for the fifth time at the PAC this season. The Eagles shot just 26.7 percent from the floor in the second half, including a 0-for-9 performance from behind the arc.
Leading the way for USI was senior guard/forward Sarah McIntosh (Cabery, Illinois) and senior forward/center Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida). McIntosh put in 10 points, eight of which came in the first period, while Sherrod added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
SIUE senior forward Ruth Kipping and freshman guard Amber Wisdom led the Cougars with 24 and 19 points, respectively.
The Eagles will be back in action this Saturday as they take on Quincy University in a homecoming GLVC match-up. Tip-off is slated for a 5:15 p.m. start at the PAC.
