USI’s Sherrod nets first-team All-Region honors,
Named second-team All-GLVC
University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball senior forward/center Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) has been named first-team Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region in a vote done by the region’s sports information directors. She also was named second-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference in a vote done by the league’s coaches.
Sherrod was a bright spot for the Screaming Eagles, who finished the season with an 8-19 record this year. She averaged a double-double, pouring in a team-leading 16.6 points per game and pulling down a conference-best 10.1 rebounds per contest. She was seven rebounds shy of tying the school-record for rebounds in a single season (281).
While finishing third in the league in scoring during the regular season, Sherrod led the GLVC with 16 double-doubles. She recorded a school-record nine straight double-doubles earlier in the year.
Sherrod’s best performances this year included a 36-point, 13-rebound performance against, then nationally-ranked, Bellarmine University. She followed that performance with a 34-point, 13-rebound performance against nationally-ranked Northern Kentucky University. The two-game performance was the highest two-game point total since 1995.
After earning All-GLVC honorable mention as a junior in 2001-02, Sherrod put her name in the USI record books during her senior campaign. She finished her two-year career at USI ranked 16th in career scoring (818) and 11th all-time in career rebounding (473). She averaged 13.6 points and 7.9 rebounds during her stay at USI.
Sherrod, who was one of four GLVC players to earn All-Region honors, will now be on the ballot Daktronics for All-America honors. A complete list of both the All-Region and All-GLVC teams is listed below.
