USI women’s basketball wins exhibition 90-74
The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team started the 2003-04 campaign off with a victory by defeating the St. Louis Goldstars, 90-74, in an exhibition game Friday at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana.
USI shot 59.6 percent for the game and had four players score in double-figures as the Screaming Eagles won their first exhibition contest since defeating the Cincinnati Stars, 91-72, in 2000.
The Eagles wasted little time as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the contest. USI shot 60 percent from the floor in the first period and forced the Goldstars into 16-first half turnovers as they went into the break with a 51-29 advantage.
USI shot 59.1 percent in the second stanza and built its lead to as many as 28 points before seeing the Goldstars finish the contest on a 23-13 run.
Senior forward Shajuan Lindsey (Midlothian, Illinois) led the Eagles with 16 points while sophomore forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) shot 5-of-7 from the field to finish with 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.
Freshman guard Leah Stormont (Haubstadt, Indiana) and senior guard/forward Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) chipped in 10 points apiece while junior guard Kennitra Johnson (New Albany, Indiana) added 9 points and a game-high 6 assists.
The Eagles will open their 2003 regular season Saturday, November 15, when they host Pittsburg State University. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. at the PAC.
