USI women’s basketball falls to Bellarmine in GLVC opener

The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team stumbled for the first time this season, falling 93-86 on the road to Bellarmine University Saturday evening. USI goes to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes 4-0 overall, 1-0 GLVC.
The first half saw the Screaming Eagles jump out to an early 12-6 lead before the Lady Knights began the first of several comebacks in the game. After the score was tied 12-12, the teams began a back-and-forth struggle that saw nine ties before Bellarmine took control at the intermission, 43-38.
USI began the second half with a 13-2 run and led 51-45 with 14:57 to play. Bellarmine, once again, came back to take the lead 52-51 before the Eagles tied the score 52-52 and went on a 13-5 run to post its biggest lead of the second half, 65-57, with 10:59 to play.
The Lady Knights responded with a 15-4 run for the final lead change of the game and took control 72-69. The Eagles were able to stay close and got to with two at 83-81 before Bellarmine closed out the contest with a 10-5 run.
USI was led by junior guard/forward Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) with 20 points, including five three-point field goals. She was followed by senior guard Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) and junior guard Kennitra Johnson (New Albany, Indiana) with 18 points each and senior forward Shajuan Lindsey (Midlothian, Illinois), who dropped in 15 points.
The Eagles resume their four-game conference road trip with a 5:15 p.m. tip-off against Kentucky Wesleyan College at the Sportscenter Monday, December 1.
